ONE LIVE, ALL OTHERS GONE”…THE LAST JOURNEY.
On the afternoon of 12 June, 2025, Air India flight AI 171- a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner registered VT-ANB took off from Ahmedabad at 13:38 IST in direction to London Gatwick. On board, were 242 souls that never imagined that journey to be their last stop, those lives include Indians, Britons, Portuguese and Canadian some were newlyweds, married men and women, young and vibrant souls who were all anticipating a reunion with their love ones.
Tragically. After lift-off, at around 625 feat, the plane lost control then sway into a fatal descent. No one could imagine that lives can be lost within thirty seconds but this was the case for the India flight which collided with a hostel building in the B.J. Medical College campus in Meghani Nagar. In those thirty seconds, the beautiful bird turn into an exploding fireball that stunned onlookers. The huge fireball lit the afternoon sky and rolled upward in a thick, black mushroom of smoke that could be seen for kilometers across Ahmedabad. After the impact the mid-part of the jet was nothing but a twisted, charred shell. Windows had melted into ragged ovals, seats were ripped loose and scattered across broken concrete, its red-and-white tail rested amid broken bricks and steel rods. Fragments from the jet lay everywhere around the College.
By the time emergency team arrived, many lives were already gone. Videos from the B.J. Medical College show plates of food left uneaten, indicating that the aircraft hit the building when the students were having their lunch. Tragically, 290 lives including passengers, crew and locals perished in that faithful tragedy. Unlike many tragedy, one man miraculously survived amidst the fire debris. He is named Vishwash Kumar Ramesh a British-Indian from Leicester, sitting in seat 11A, near an emergency exit. That particular spot gave him the second chance to beat death but sadly, his brother Ajaykumar seated nearby didn’t survive. He returned as a survivor and telling how he woke up and saw bodies lying lifeless on the ground he also exclaimed his fear and disbelief saying “I thought I would die” before drifting into unconsciousness.
These lives lost leave a big mourning state and a story they will never forget. Notable figures including PM Narendra Modi, U.K. Keir Starmer, King Charles III, Sundar Pichai, and even Bollywood stars like Vicky Kaushal, Janhvi Kapoor, and R. Madhavan voiced grief and solidarity.
